Over the past two decades ethnomusicologists have created an ever growing amount of video field recordings as primary sources for their studies. While digital audio preservation has become well understood over the past two decades, and uncompromising standards have been accepted worldwide, video preservation is facing the dilemma of its excessive amounts of data. Therefore "lossy" data compression, the omission of perceptually less noticeable information details, is widely applied in recent video production as well as in video archiving of analogue and linear digital video originals, which is not archival in the narrower sense. Such practice severely hampers the integrity of the original recording, limiting its use for specific ethnomusicological questions, such as analysis of dance and instrumental music. However, recent development, specifically the significant decrease of storage costs, opens new horizons for arching video in an uncompromising way that follows the archival principles as standardized for audio.
